Head of Shipping and Logistics
Upwork
About Us We're Not Just a Patch (NJAP) — an Australian-founded medical adhesive patch business shipping into 65+ countries through 30+ distributors, plus direct-to-consumer via Shopify and Amazon (US, CA, UK, DE, AU, JP). We're scaling fast and need a senior operator to take full ownership of our global shipping, customs and supply chain function. The Role We're looking for a Head of Shipping, Logistics, Supply Chain & Distribution who can own this entire function end-to-end. Primary focus is customs and compliance expertise — particularly USA imports — with the ability to optimise efficiency, reduce duty/tax exposure, and prevent compliance issues before they arise. You will own: - US and global customs strategy: HTS/HTSUS classification, Section 301 duty exposure, Importer of Record setup, CBP entries, CF-28/CF-29 responses, reasonable-care defence, prior-disclosure considerations - Carrier/3PL relationships (DHL, freight forwarders, US 3PLs) — rate negotiation, lane optimisation, performance management - Inbound logistics from manufacturers in China and Korea to AU, US, EU and other markets - Outbound distribution to 30+ international distributors and direct-to-retail (e.g. Walgreens-style retailers) - Multi-entity shipping setup, commercial invoicing, declared values, packaging compliance - Regulatory / medical device compliance (CE marking, declarations of conformity, FDA-relevant documentation) - Supply chain forecasting, inventory positioning across regions, cost-to-serve modelling Bonus / nice-to-have (not required): - General e-commerce operations experience: Shopify / WooCommerce, Amazon Seller Central across regions - Ability to oversee or coordinate website improvements, digital marketing, product listing optimisation, conversion rate optimisation - Experience with Airtable, GA4, Stripe, Metorik, PayPal multi-currency You are: - A licensed customs broker, ex-broker, or seasoned logistics leader with deep hands-on US customs expertise - Comfortable taking full ownership — not just advising. You build SOPs, run vendors, and close the loop - Detail-obsessed on compliance, but commercially minded on cost - A strong written communicator who works async with a small distributed team - Experienced with medical devices, regulated goods, or similar (preferred but not essential) Immediate priorities (first 30–60 days): 1. Audit our current US import setup and recent CBP issues (we have a live CBP hold on a China to US shipment flagged for repetitive undervaluation that needs urgent senior input) 2. Review HTSUS classifications across our SKU range and Section 301 exposure 3. Map current global lanes, duties and 3PL/forwarder costs; identify quick wins 4. Recommend an optimal multi-entity Importer of Record and tax structure To apply, please include: - A short cover note describing the most relevant US customs / compliance situation you've personally led - Your licensure (US customs broker license #, if applicable) or qualifications - Hourly rate and weekly availability - 1–2 references or examples of comparable engagements We move fast, value clear thinking, and pay for expertise. Looking forward to hearing from you.
